If you’re considering some interior remodeling,
it’s time to rethink the way we’ve
done things in the past.
Take note if your home was
built before 1978. Common
renovation activities like
sanding, cutting and demolition
may create hazardous
lead dust and chips by disturbing leadbased
paint. This may be very harmful to adults and children. A new Federal law will take effect soon.
The EPA issued a ruling requiring the use of
lead-safe practices aimed at preventing lead
poisoning. This rule does not apply to minor
maintenance where less than six square feet
of paint is disturbed. But it does apply if you
are replacing windows and doors, removing
walls and cutting into drywall.
Effective April 22, 2010, all contractors performing
these activities will be required to receive
training and acquire EPA certification.

The Building Department Inspector is in the office
on Tuesdays and Thursdays only.
The Mayor oversees the operation of the Building Department. The Building Inspector approves all permits for signs, fences and new homes (to name a few) and calculates related fees. The Department also collaborates with the Planning Commission and processes all paperwork for the Zoning Board of Appeals.
The Building Department is responsible for implementing and enforcing our local zoning and building codes. It assists in establishing a minimum standard necessary to make all dwelling and structures safe, sanitary, free from fire and health hazards and fit for human habitation. To accomplish this goal, the Building Department conducts zoning inspections on commercial property and building and zoning inspections on residential property, records resident complaints, dispatches service personnel, records water breaks, generates property maintenance violations and performs a variety of other activities involving buildings and properties within the Village.
The Department maintains files on every property in the Village with building plans, permits, inspection records and zoning inquiries contained therein.

Lead Hazard Control Grants
If you are the parent or caregiver for a child 5 years of age or younger, the Cuyahoga County Board of Health’s Lead Safe Cuyahoga grant can provide up to $10,000 of free work to remove lead hazards in your home. These repairs may include window and door replacement, house, porch and interior painting. All work is performed by licensed lead abatement contractors. Residents, homeowners or tenants, of Walton Hills can participate if they meet the income guidelines and have a child age 5 or younger who is in their home more than 20 hours per week. This may include parents, grandparents, or child care providers. Also all qualified participants receive a new vacuum. We encourage all Walton Hills residents to call the Cuyahoga County Board of Health at
